The Complete Liverpool City Student Guide

Liverpool is one of the UK’s most vibrant student cities, with a known musical history, lively nightlife, and four universities. Whether you’re coming to Liverpool for the first time this year or returning for your final year of university, our guide to Liverpool student life will help you make the most of your time here.

What you should know: Liverpool city guide

In upcoming blogs, we’ll go into places to eat, drink, and more, but first, let us introduce this fantastic city. The city of Liverpool, in Merseyside in northwest England, became a prominent port throughout the Industrial Revolution. The river joins the Irish Sea, which helps to explain Liverpool’s image as “Ireland’s second capital,” with up to half of the city’s inhabitants having Irish ancestors. Prepare to guzzle green beer and watch one of the largest parades in the UK on St. Patrick’s Day!

It’s a well-connected city, with major train stations like Liverpool Central and Liverpool Lime Street making cross-country travel a breeze. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a fantastic place to start if you’re an international student building a new home here.

Wherever you come from, you can end up rooting for one of the city’s two Premier League football teams, Liverpool FC or Everton FC. Or, if you prefer the underdog, how about Tranmere Rovers of League Two? Football isn’t your thing? Whatever your interests are, the city has a lot to offer as a previous European Capital of Culture in 2008, making it the ideal venue for exploring Liverpool student life.

Activities for Students in Liverpool

While Liverpool student nightlife is a highlight in itself, there’s still plenty for students to do in Liverpool during the day. Only London can boast that they have as many national museums and art galleries, so culture vultures are well catered for. Explore the Tate Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery, not to mention the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the British Music Experience. Liverpool Cathedral is well worth a visit; it is a beautiful building and houses Tracey Emin’s eye-catching neon artwork.

If you want to go shopping, you’ll find all your favourites on the main street and Liverpool ONE, a shopping centre with mini-golf and a cinema. If you’re looking for some exciting things to do in Liverpool for students, go no further than Liverpool One. Bold Street has a plethora of vintage shops, including Dig Vinyl and the community bookshop News from Nowhere.

We asked our colleagues in Liverpool to list day trip ideas a bit farther afield. Those at the top of the list were:

  • Aintree races.
  • New Brighton in Wirral.
  • Checking out the stunning Iron Men statues on Crosby Beach.

With so much going on in the city, you may be wondering: where do students live in Liverpool? You’ll be completely spoiled for choice when it comes to student lettings in and around the city centre.
